When students dressed as Breaking Bad characters, unicorns and Tetris blocks descend upon one of Camden’s punkiest haunts, you know it’s a recipe for disaster.

RareFM, UCL’s student radio station and spiritual Siamese twin to Under City Lights, went live for the 2013/14 academic year at the Barfly last Monday. What better reason to have a party. There was cake designed to look like DJ decks (although it was confusingly green) as well as a surplus of party poppers for the glorious moment the radio station began to broadcast. And what a moment it was; media history in the making. Confetti flew into the air, the music was drowned out by shrill screams of ecstasy and cake was distributed sparsely. There was not enough cake to go around yet we fed everyone. It was biblical.
Peaking at circa 120 people, the radio station enjoyed an enthusiastic turn out and a wonderful array of costumes. The music was provided by our very own DJs until 10.30, who combined more minimal house numbers with recognisable melodies. It wasn’t trashy but it wasn’t too hip either. Then one of the Barfly resident DJs came on, whacked-out N****s in Paris and forced most people to the bar. A swaggering John Lennon approached the decks and gave him an earful. He’s the good looking one in the photos below.
Locals were allowed in at this point and became confused by what looked like the Easter Bunny’s funeral through the eyes of a druid. People were dressed fantastically, dancing badly and rebelling against the Camden mould. As university socials go, the night avoided most of the pitfalls that make students (especially sporty ones) hateable and corrosive. No one was forced to drink anything, no one was sick and no one was wearing ties a la investment banker. The night was a roaring success, indicative of all the progress RareFM has made over the last year. It has gone down in the annals as the most successful society event since its creation in 1998. Onwards and upwards.
