5 acts not to miss at this year’s BBC 6 Music Festival in London

Words: Callie Winch

The BBC Radio 6 Music Festival begins this Friday in London, featuring over 40 artists in four iconic Camden venues, including the Roundhouse and Dingwalls. The line-up this year is an exciting future-forward amalgamation of both renowned award-winning acts and newer up-and-coming artists. To guide you, we’ve picked some of our favourites from across the weekend that you need to make sure not to miss.

Michael Kiwanuka (Friday)

BBC’s Sound of 2012 winner, Michael Kiwanuka, will be headlining the Friday night Roundhouse Main Space slot, which is highly anticipated by many following the release of his third studio album, Kiwanuka, at the end of last year. With Kiwanuka being one of the UK’s finest singer-songwriters at the moment, you need to make this set of soulful indie rock a top priority for Friday evening at the 6 Music Festival.

What we want to see him play: You Ain’t The Problem, ‘Cold Little Heart’, and ‘Home Again

Black Midi (Friday)

Following the release of their debut studio album, Schlangenheim, last year, Black Midi are sure to play a memorable set of experimental rock at the festival this weekend. Black Midi, playing before Michael Kiwanuka, has become acclaimed over the past couple of years for their energetic, riotous live performances so be sure to catch the London-based band at this intimate show before they take over the festival season this year.

What we want to see them play: ‘bmbmbm’, ‘953’ and ‘Talking Heads

Sports Team (Friday)

Next up is perhaps the most quintessentially British band on the indie scene at the moment, Sports Team, who will be headlining the Roundhouse Sackler Space on Friday, presumably on a buzz from the success of the release of recent single ‘Here’s The Thing’. A flamboyant, theatrical show is guaranteed to pull a full house with this six-piece on the line-up. Sports Team are definitely ones to keep an eye on over the next year.

What we want to see them play: Here’s The Thing, ‘Beverly Rose’, and ‘Fishing

The Orielles (Saturday)

After the recent release of their second album, Disco Volador, The Orielles’s set on Saturday evening should be packed full of new, funk-driven songs that have been eagerly anticipated by many. With a seamless mix of 90s indie and 60s psych on their tracks, this band has driven their increasing popularity and is steadily attracting diverse crowds at their live shows. Don’t miss out - be sure to see them at the Roundhouse on Saturday.

What we want to see them play: Come Down On Jupiter, ‘Bobbi’s Second World’ and ‘Sugar Tastes Like Salt

Squid (Sunday)

Following three packed shows at Glastonbury last year, Squid is a band driving the post-punk revival and are subsequently top of the list for many to see live this year. Their set at Electric Ballroom this Sunday is set to bring a chaotic energy to the famous venue prior to the anticipated headline set from Bombay Bicycle Club. Catch the true chaotic essence of this band at their show during the BBC 6 Music Festival before they go on to play across Europe this summer.

What we want to see them play: The Cleaner, ‘Houseplants’, and ‘The Dial
